Calico, Tortie, or Both? A Love Letter to the World's Most Colorful Cats

If your cat looks like it got into the watercolor paints, this one's for you — a love letter to calico and tortoiseshell cats, and the stickers, keychains, bookmarks, and coasters made just for them.

Let's talk about the cats that refuse to be one color. Calicos and torties (that's tortoiseshell, for anyone new here) are basically nature's proof that cats didn't want to be boxed in. White, black, and orange all showing up on one cat like a happy accident? Iconic. And if you own one, you already know they've also got the personality to match — "tortitude" is a real thing, and we don't make the rules.

Here's a fun fact we love sharing: calico and tortie coloring is genetically tied to the X chromosome, which is why the vast majority of these cats are female. So if you're a calico or tortoiseshell mom (pun fully intended), you're in very good, very colorful company.

This is also exactly why we can't stop designing for these cats. No two calicos are patched the same way, and no two torties have quite the same swirl of ginger and black. That kind of individuality is basically a gift to an illustrator — every watercolor design gets to feel like it was painted for one specific, unrepeatable cat. We've leaned all the way into it, because if there's one thing we've learned running this little shop, it's that calico and tortoiseshell cat people are some of the most enthusiastic customers we have.

Where to find them in the shop

Our calico and tortie designs come in both watercolor-style (soft, painterly, a little dreamy) and kawaii-style (round cheeks, big eyes, maximum charm), so however you picture your cat's personality, there's a version for that.

  • Vinyl stickers — water-resistant and die-cut, perfect for a water bottle, laptop, or the inside of a car door where only you will see it and smile.
  • Acrylic keychains — these are consistently our best-selling product type, and it's not hard to see why. Clip one to your bag or keys and suddenly your cat is coming with you everywhere.
  • Magnetic bookmarks — for the calico owner who is also, statistically, very likely to be a reader. Keep your place without dog-earing (heh) a single page.
  • Fridge magnets — a tiny daily reminder of your favorite chaotic little roommate.
  • Ceramic car coasters — because your cup holder deserves some personality too, and these hold up beautifully to daily use.

Our favorite part of making these is when someone messages us saying a design looks exactly like their cat's specific patchwork. That's the whole goal. Calicos and torties are basically walking abstract art, and every one of them deserves to be celebrated rather than lumped in as just "an orange cat" or "a black cat with some white."

A gift idea, while we're here

If you know a calico or tortoiseshell person in your life — and honestly, if you're reading a stationery blog about cat coats, you probably are one — a keychain-and-sticker pairing is an easy, giftable way to make someone's day. Add a bookmark if they're a reader, or a car coaster if they're always losing their coffee cup rings on the dashboard. Small gifts, big "how did you know" energy.

Thanks for letting us nerd out about cat genetics and watercolor paint for a minute. If your calico or tortie has a name, we'd genuinely love to hear it — drop by our socials and introduce us. We're always collecting inspiration for the next design.
